In Food Science, students will explore many areas related to food. They will learn what food is on a biological level. Students will learn how our body uses food on a molecular level. We will follow the development of the human race and how that is related to food sources. We look into the different sources of food for human consumption and alternative forms of protein. Students will also be able to explore the science of taste. Chemical reactions are very important in cooking and we investigate how salt and acid are used for specific purposes in the kitchen. Food can also be used as an art medium and students will have the chance to show their creative, artistic side with activities and student demonstrations. We will explore careers related to food and have a few guest speakers from the field of Food Science. Students will learn the basics of cleanliness and preventing cross contamination in the kitchen. Kitchen safety is emphasized.
